3 Ways Healthy Nutrition Can Affect Your Happiness

Updated: Jun 25, 2020

You probably know that eating healthy is good for your body, but do you know how much it affects your mind? If you're in the habit of regularly eating less than healthy food, you might be surprised about how how much it's affecting your happiness. Lots of us use food to cope, getting a quick boost of happiness with a comfort food like ice cream, but in the long-term you're probably less happy because of it. Here's 3 ways that your food is affecting how happy you are every day.

Blood sugar

Think about the last time you felt a sugar high; you go way up and come crashing down. Stabilizing your blood sugar is a simple way to improve your happiness long-term. It's not (necessarily) about removing sugar from your diet, but about keeping a healthy balance. There's no one size fits all solution but some food is better than others at helping you maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Fat balance

Along the same lines, there's a natural balance of fats your body benefits from. If you're not familiar with fatty acids, now's a good time to learn a little more. If you are getting too much Omega-9 and Omega-6 and not enough Omega-3, your mood will likely suffer because of it. Supplements are one way to get more Omega-3, but a simple way to improve your balance is to simply eat more fish and less red meat.

Vitamins and minerals

If you aren't getting the right vitamins and minerals in your diet, your mood will probably suffer. It's one thing to know the guidelines about which vitamins and minerals you need, it's another to know if you're actually getting them. Some nutrition apps will help you with that, showing you where you can improve. And if you're using a multi-vitamin to make up for what you don't get in your diet, it's important to know there's not enough evidence to back up any health claims about them (even from doctors).
